Movement51 was started two years ago with the mission to empower the full economic participation of women through education and community. By 2030, 65% of Canada's wealth is going to be in the hands of women (exciting, right?!), so M51 is looking to increase financial literacy and the financial acumen of women across Canada and beyond.
We know that when it comes to early stage investing, there isn't necessarily the programming or the different options for women to get involved and create that safe space.
Our goal is to do that through our programming.
The Financial Feminism Investing Lab was started to create an education platform to help drive a more equity-driven financial community.
51% of the population are women. Based on the stats, we know that startups, companies, and Fortune 500 companies that are women-led are outperforming their male counterparts by 63%. And yet the numbers also show us that women worldwide only receive about 1.8% of venture capital.
We want to look at the system and the system that's in place. When we look at the traditional capital allocators, they are typically male; they might not see opportunities right in front of their faces, like Femtech or other solutions with women in mind.
So Movement51 partnered with the University of Calgary to create a platform and an educational program that focused on this and both learning about investing in women-led businesses or investing in funds.
