Everyone eats. This session will provide a high level introduction to the dynamics of the food system in these troubled times and expose the opportunities for impact investment that would interest investors.
What are the challenges? Growing world population, increasing climate disasters, ocean warming and loss of biodiversity, as well as growing health challenges. We need to feed Canadians and support Canadian entrepreneurs to grow and scale to meet increasing demands for nutritious food. Working to overcome the poor record of investing in the food sector is of critical concern.
Why is food sustainability important?
About the Speakers
Sandy Mark
Project Co-Manager and Founding Executive Director of Small Scale Food Processor Association (SSFPA)
Sandra and her partner founded the Small Scale Food Processor Association in BC in 2021 at a meeting where processors named the issues they were facing and agreed to stand together to form the new organization. Sandra was the first Executive Director and has always supported the organization as a consultant and as a food processor herself. She came back 6 years ago to set up Women's Programs since it was clear that women made up the majority of starting and scaling food entrepreneurs but they continue to experience serious barriers Sandra's career as a serial social entrepreneur focused on community economic development, mostly in rural communities. She loves living in rural eastern Ontario but misses her colleagues in BC.
